Cohen: We Voted For Growth

Faced with a looming fiscal catastrophe, Americans must make the same choice they did on Election Day: Growth over austerity.

“We’re going to have to stand up across America and say, ‘No you’re not going to cut our Social Security.’ People who make over $250,000 a year can pay a little bit more, not a lot,” said CWA President Larry Cohen on The Ed Schultz Show this afternoon. “We can look after small business. That argument that Republicans raise is just to be divisive. We voted for growth, and we’re going to fight for growth.”

Cohen said that we often forget that Medicare and Medicaid are tied to growth. “We cut consumption, there will be no growth in this economy,” he said.

Ending Washington Gridlock

It’s going to be a new day in the Senate. Seven Democratic senators elect — Tammy Baldwin (WI), Martin Heinrich (NM), Heidi Heitkamp (ND), Mazie Hirono (HI), Tim Kaine (VA), Chris Murphy (CT) and Elizabeth Warren (MA) — have all committed to “fix the broken Senate by reforming the filibuster.” Independent Angus King, who replaces Maine’s moderate Republican Olympia Snowe, won on his platform of reforming the filibuster. Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell (WA) pledged to work to change filibuster rules in her third term. And on election night, Majority Whip Dick Durbin (IL) stressed the need for reform.

Countdown To Election Day

In a frenetic burst of activity – just hours before Election Day – CWA activists across battleground states are making their final pitch for President Obama, candidates in key state races and critical ballot initiatives. This election cycle, CWA has been focused on one-on-one, member-to-member contacts. Nearly 15,000 volunteers have phone banked, participated in labor walks and leafleted 3,000 worksites. “We try to root the political work we do, not in a party or in a candidate, but around what we call economic justice issues and democracy issues and how they’re linked,” said CWA President Larry Cohen on The Richard Fowler Show.

Veterans Group Exposes George Allen

With help from CWA, VoteVets.org is airing a new ad warning Virginians about Senate candidate George Allen’s extremist views.

"There are over 800,000 veterans like me living in Virginia, and time and again George Allen has turned his back on us,” says the ad’s narrator. “He voted to let health care premiums triple for three million military retirees. He voted against billions for veterans care. And George Allen said, 'Whatever the government program is, no matter how essential it is, it is a waste.' If George Allen thinks veterans' programs are a waste, maybe voting for him is the real waste."

Watch and share it now.

Cohen: Beware Of ‘Fairy Tale Capitalism’

CWA President Larry Cohen went on The Ed Show last night to discuss the campaign in Ohio, what CWA activists are doing to overcome voter suppression and the fight to reelect President Obama to a second term.

Cohen said workers, whether they’re in telecommunications or manufacturing, understand that difference between “going backwards into fairy tale capitalism” and forward with the president.

“We will see Sherrod Brown, Barack Obama win on Election Day by significant margins in Ohio because working Americans won't be fooled, know the difference,” he said. “Nobody's going to keep them from voting, and those votes will count. Every vote will count. We need that enthusiasm going into Election Day."
