Last week tens of thousands of young undocumented immigrants flooded churches, law offices and help centers across the county to begin applying for relief from deportation. Thanks to an executive order by President Barack Obama those who entered the United States illegally as children can now defer deportation and work for at least two years.
Reyna Martinez, 19, has lived in the United States since she was 7 years old. She told The New York Times:
“I know that out there many people are looking for the same thing as I am. We are not alone; we stand together as a big crowd.”
The labor movement stands with immigrants like Reyna. Union members are partnering with United We Dream to host forums and registration drives. We’ll be sharing these young adults’ stories with working families and making sure they know their legal rights in the workplace.
