Verizon Umbrella Competencies
The Verizon Umbrella competencies represent strategic soft skills required of Verizon employees to be successful on the job. A consortium of twenty-three colleges in Seven Northeastern states have agreed to embed the competencies within the course content of an A.A.S. Telecommunications Technology degree program for Verizon technicians. Titled Next Step, the degree program was developed by the college consortium, in partnership with Verizon and its Technical Unions; CWA (Communications Workers of America) and IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

The Alliance for Employee Growth and Development, Inc.
A cooperative venture between labor and business, the Alliance for Employee Growth and Development, Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to enhance employment security for all AT&T, Avaya Inc., Lucent Technologies and other employees represented by the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (T-3 Council-non-manufacturing). The Alliance offers career and personal development training and educational opportunities to more than 88,000 eligible workers at AT&T, Avaya Inc., Lucent Technologies and other work sites nationwide. The Alliance is among the most successful joint labor/management initiatives in the United States and is included in the collective bargaining agreements between CWA, IBEW, AT&T, Avaya Inc., Lucent Technologies and others.

PATHWAYS
PATHWAYS is the education and training benefit program for eligible U S WEST employees. It has been collectively bargained by U S WEST and the Communications Workers of America. A voluntary program, PATHWAYS enables employees to take courses, workshops and seminars in subject areas of their choice on their own time.

National Advisory Coalition for Telecommunications Education and Learning (NACTEL)
Recognizing their common goals, representatives from Bell Atlantic, The Communications Workers of America (CWA), GTE, The International Brotherhood of Electrical workers (IBEW), SBC and U S West formed NACTEL, an industry coalition dedicated to telecommunications education and learning. The program offers an asynchronous Associate's Degreee in Telecommunications.
