The Verizon Workers' March for the 99%--with a dozen workers marching the whole way from Albany--will arrive in NYC and join a massive rally in Lower Manhattan.
Most CWA members are meeting at Verizon HQ at 140 West Street between 4 and 5pm for a large informational picket. Members will march from 140 West Street at 5pm to join a massive rally for the 99% on Foley Square on the two month anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, which has focused attention on corporate greed. With high spirits and chants of "We are the 99%!", a dozen marchers headed South from Albany to Stuyvesant, New York. The weather for the kick-off was beautiful. Labor leaders and State Senator Breslin, State Assmeblymember McEneny and others joined CWA Vice President Chris Shelton to rally up the crowd in front of the Verizon building, across from the State Capitol and Occupy Albany. Marchers were warmly greeted upon arrival in Stuyvesant, with some locals bringing refreshments to share with the group. Some of the marchers wanted to Occupy Stuyvesant after that but Friday is another big day to send a message to the 1% at Verizon. Onward!

Verizon workers, members of the Communications Workers of America, will walk more than 150 miles over 8 days from Occupy Albany to Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan, home to Occupy Wall Street, to highlight Verizon and Verizon Wireless's greedy attempt to slash hundreds of millions in benefits for workers across the Northeast while the company's profits soar. The marchers will reach New York City on November 17th – a day of nationwide actions against corporate greed.

As Verizon continues to offer proposals aimed to destroy middle-class jobs and cut benefits, Verizon workers are hitting the streets. Verizon represents not just the 1%, but the top one-tenth of 1% in this country. The company’s five highest executives took home $258 million in salary and benefits over the last four years. Yet, Verizon paid no federal income taxes from 2008 to 2010 and instead received $951 million in tax rebates. On Thursday, November 10, the Verizon Workers' March for the 99% will set off for New York City from downtown Albany to shine a spotlight on the corporate greed run rampant at Verizon.
