The Communications Workers of America is strongly backing new, bi-partisan legislation introduced in the House of Representatives today that would ban federal grants and loans to corporations who move U.S. call center jobs overseas. CWA represents 700,000 workers in telecommunications and other sectors; more than 150,000 are customer service professionals.

Frontier Airlines flight attendants represented by the AFA-CWA have ratified a first contract with strong job security language, a grievance procedure and other protections.

The 106 members of CWA Local 3673, located in the hills of North Carolina, will be joining their brothers and sisters in West Virginia by negotiating contracts with Frontier in late August.

In a tune that's really getting old, Frontier Communications is pushing for big cuts from its CWA- and IBEW-represented workers after seeing fit to reward themselves with huge bonuses averaging 77 percent.

One important event during the Leadership Conference in Jacksonville was a meeting of the Frontier Bargaining Council on March 6 which was organized by the CWA Telecommunications and Technology office. The majority of the bargaining units were well represented at the meeting.

In 2006 the CWA Convention approved the use of part of the Members Relief Fund for Strategic Industry Funds (SIF) to finance “large-scale campaigns to increase our bargaining power.” In light of challenges facing us at the “new” Frontier, we have recently received approval for a two-year SIF project to work to unite legacy Frontier and “Spinco” (ex-Verizon) units and to develop strategies to improve our bargaining position for our upcoming contracts. One part of that project is to train stewards, activists and other members who want to be involved in building this fight.

The bargaining talks for Rochester, New York Legacy employees kicked off on January 31, 2011. For Local President John Pusloskie, patience has been a needed virtue as the talks have been proceeding slowly due to the tough issues involved and the lack of availability on Frontier’s behalf. Frontier’s two negotiators have been unable to schedule many bargaining sessions due to their time being split between talks with CWA Local 1170 in New York and an IBEW local in North Carolina. March 17 marked the first round of talks with Frontier that had taken place in weeks.
