Osha Faults Verizon In Death Of Brooklyn Technician Douglas Lalima

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced today that its investigation into the death of Verizon technician Douglas Lalima — who was electrocuted while working on a utility pole in Brooklyn last September — has resulted in 10 citations against Verizon and fines totaling $140,700 for serious and repeated failures by the company to abide by critical safety rules. The fines in the citation are the maximum penalties under the law for such egregious conduct.

AT&T Premise Technician Andrel Reid has been on the job for just six months, but he will always remember his Feb. 1 visit to the Lansing, Mich., home of customer Christine Duffy. The Local 4034 member was dispatched to fix Duffy's U-verse service, but he ended up saving the life of Duffy's four-month old baby girl.

Arbitration Award: CWA Local 9003/Verizon Accident Plan

This precedent-setting ruling supports CWA’s position that Verizon’s Safety Policy/Accident Plan is arbitrary and capricious- intended to be used as a method to control and intimidate Company employees.
