As this CWA Newsletter closed out, some Senate Republicans led by Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) were continuing to stall discussion of the bill to provide health care and compensation to Sept. 11 responders at Ground Zero. The legislation would help ailing police officers, firefighters, telecom workers and others – including many CWA members -- who were on the ground in the earliest days following Sept. 11.

Fifty-five Senators voted to have a full discussion and debate on a bill to give public safety officers collective bargaining rights. But under the current Senate rules, a majority just isn’t enough. That majority vote couldn’t overcome the 40 Republicans and three Democrats who killed the bill by not allowing it to be debated by the full Senate. All Republicans plus Democrats Mark Warner (Va.), Kay Hagan (N.C.) and Michael Bennet (Colo.) voted against full discussion of the bill.

Months ago, the House of Representatives voted to cover medical treatment and monitoring for workers exposed to toxins at Ground Zero, where workers, including hundreds of CWAers, were on the job following the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

The San Bernardino County Probation Officers' Association, representing 305 officers, voted on Sept. 13 to become part of CWA Local 9111, the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs (COPS).

Last January, they had demonstrated outside the state capital over their low salaries – and this week 30 Local 2055 members in Charleston, W.Va. rallied at the same spot to thank lawmakers and the governor for boosting pay for corrections officers by $2,000 with the prospect of another $3,000 the next two years.
