New AFA-CWA International President Veda Shook was sworn in Tuesday as the newest member of the CWA Executive Board, which met this week at CWA headquarters in Washington, D.C.

A proposal to reform the U.S. Senate rules was introduced Jan. 5, the first day of the new Congress. CWA and more than 50 other organizations, including the League of Women Voters, have been working for months to improve the way the Senate works.

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is the only international human rights treaty to focus exclusively on the rights of women. To date, it has only been ratified 186 of 193 countries worldwide. Sadly missing, like Iran, Somalia and Sudan, is the United States. The treaty protects fundamental rights, addressing violence against women, the right to vote, sex trafficking, and access to education among other important issues to women.

Gayle Crawley, Chair of the National Women’s Committee, is involved in the race to find a cure for breast cancer. Like too many in CWA, her local has been touched by this disease, which kills someone in the world every 69 seconds. The National Women’s Committee invites all of CWA to keep up to date with the latest technological advances for this important cause.

Forty-five years ago, President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act (EPA) into law, making it illegal for employers to pay unequal wages to men and women who perform substantially equal work. At the time of the EPA’s passage in 1963, women earned merely 59 cents to every dollar earned by men. Although enforcement of the EPA as well as other civil rights laws has helped to narrow the wage gap, significant disparities remain and need to be addressed. Today, women make, on average, only 78 cents for every dollar earned by men.

The AFL-CIO and the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Md., are expanding educational opportunities for working families through a new partnership with the Princeton Review and its Penn Foster Education Group.
