1,784 Former AT&T Wireless Workers in California & Nevada Organize with CWA at Cingular Wireless.

On Oct. 13, the largest single day of union recognition by former AT&T Wireless workers at Cingular, nearly 1,800 Customer Care and Retail Sales employees gained representation with CWA. The American Arbitration Association certified that a majority of the employees in the locations – over 1,600 at three customer care centers in California and 84 retail sales associates statewide in Nevada -- supported CWA representation.

With these latest campaigns, more than 7,900 former AT&T Wireless workers at Cingular have gained CWA representation this year. Since August, the number of Cingular Wireless employees with CWA representation has grown from 22,000 to nearly 30,000. The workers been organizing at a rate of over 110 a day since they were covered by CWA's neutrality agreement with Cingular.

The campaign in California required tremendous coordination, and hard work and cooperation by CWA locals paid off, reported District 9 Vice President Tony Bixler. CWA Local 9510 organizers Kenny Williams assisted the employees' inside organizing committee at the 600-person plus Anaheim Hills Call Center. Local 9400 organizers Jeff Finley and Marj Terflinger assisted workers at the Cerritos call center, which has more than 260 employees. Local 9421 organizer Cherri Henzie assisted workers at the 720-person Sacramento call center. Providing support were Virginia Rodriguez, Adm. Assist. to the VP; Mark Bixler, Area Director; Laura Reynolds, Staff Representative, and John Dugan Organizing Coordinator.

In Nevada, the AAA certified on Oct. 13 that the majority of Cingular's 84 Retail Sales Associates in Nevada also supported CWA representation. The employees work in 14 locations throughout the state. One-on-one contact, phone banks, and store meetings with and by the workers were keys to the successful campaign. Local 9413 EVP Liz Sorenson assisted the retail sales workers along with Mike Hicks, Jim Pierce, and Mimi Pearl. Providing support were Mark Bixler, Laura Reynolds and John Dugan.

Since August, more than a third of Cingular's 22,000 workers from AT&T Wireless have sought and gained CWA representation.
