Boston Seminar, Friday May 14:

International Journalists, Experts on Media Globalization

The Newspaper Guild-CWA, together with the International Federation of Journalists, will hold a one-day seminar on "Globalization of the Media and its Effect on Journalists" on Friday, May 14 in Boston.

The daylong program will cover today's top issues in journalism and reporting: the effort to balance audience and business interests and journalists' values; the globalization of media ownership; intellectual property rights and more. It will begin at 9 a.m. at the Boston Teachers Union, Carson Place, 180 Mt. Vernon St., in Boston. (See agenda)

Participants will include Aidan White, general secretary of the IFJ, who has just returned from Belgrade and who will report on the war's impact on journalists and the media in the Balkans.

The IFJ has begun a solidarity program to support independent media and journalists affected by the conflict in Serbia, including solidarity centers, humanitarian assistance to displaced journalists and those who have been the victims of violence and other emergency aid.

Featured speaker is Noam Chomsky, professor of linguistics and philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Chomsky has written and lectured extensively on current and international affairs, as well as intellectual history and philosophy. His works include Rethinking Camelot: JFK, the Vietnam War and U.S. Political Culture; Profit Over People; and World Orders, Old and New.

TNG-CWA President Linda Foley; Bill Kovach, who heads the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University; and Mark Crispin Miller of New York University's Project
of Media Ownership are among the participants.

TNG-CWA represents more than 35,000 journalists and newspaper workers; the IFJ is the largest journalist organization in the world, representing some 450,000 journalists in 100 countries.

The seminar will be held at the Boston Teachers Union, Carson Place, 180 Mt. Vernon Street in Boston. For more information and directions, contact the Boston Teachers Union function office at 617/288-3322.
