California Organization of Police and Sheriffs and CWA Announce Major Affiliation

Sacramento, Calif. -- The California Organization of Police and Sheriffs (COPS) and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) announce the signing of an affiliation agreement, effective April 5, between COPS and CWA. COPS fights to advance the law enforcement profession and represents thousands of working public safety officers throughout California on labor, legal and legislative matters.

COPS is celebrating its 28th year of service to California law enforcement officers. The organization was a principal author and sponsor of the 1976 Public Safety Officers Procedural Bill of Rights Act, landmark legislation that safeguards law enforcement officers in internal affairs investigations.

CWA is an international labor organization, affiliated with the AFL-CIO, representing more than 700,000 workers in the telecommunications and information technology; media, publishing and printing; health care and higher education; manufacturing, and the public sector, including law enforcement. CWA's law enforcement division – the National Coalition of Public Safety Officers (NCPSO), has extensive membership throughout Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and also represents law enforcement officers in West Virginia, New York, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Mississippi.

"This affiliation is a very exciting opportunity for COPS to expand its ability to organize among California law enforcement officers," said COPS Executive Director Monty Holden. "CWA is well-known for its organizing expertise, and we intend to tap into that resource to build the COPS membership base." Holden also noted that the affiliation would allow COPS and CWA to combine their political connections for the mutual benefit of both organizations and members.

"We are very excited about having COPS as a part of the CWA union family," said CWA District 9 Vice President Tony Bixler. "COPS already is a strong force and household name in California, and the COPS-CWA relationship will be a force to be reckoned with at the local, county, state governments levels."
