Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Employees Vote for Canadian Media Guild

In a national union representation election, workers at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation voted decisively for representation by the Canadian Media Guild, a local union of The Newspaper Guild/Canada, Communications Workers of America.

By a 59 percent vote, the CBC workers, in production, administrative, technical and trades positions, consolidated their strength into one union. Previously, the Canadian Media Guild represented about 3,800 workers at the CBC, with another 1,400 workers represented by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union. The mail ballot was overseen by the Canada Industrial Relations Board.

Arnold Amber, director of TNG/Canada, CWA, said the vote produced "one strong union that will be able to better present our views forcefully at the CBC, which is in constant change. At the same time, we'll be even stronger in our fight for public broadcasting in Canada."

Canadian Media Guild President Lise Lareau said employees recognized CMG's track record at CBC, adding that the vote "gives us good ground to build a bigger and stronger union."

TNG/Canada represents more than 8,000 workers in newspapers, radio and television in every part of Canada. It is an autonomous part of CWA, with the responsibility for running its own bargaining, legislative and other affairs, but able to draw on the resources of CWA for support.

Linda Foley, president of TNG-CWA, said the unit would bring a strong and united voice to its efforts to improve conditions at CBC and in raising issues regarding the public interest in broadcasting.
