Cingular Wireless, CWA Announce Expanded Card Check, Neutrality Agreement

Following is a joint release issued by Cingular Wireless and CWA on a new card check recognition and neutrality agreement.
ATLANTA -- Cingular Wireless and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) today announced that they have reached a Neutrality and Card Check Agreement covering eligible employees in CWA's District 3, which includes the states of Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Cingular's position of neutrality states that management will not express any opinion for or against Union representation. Under Card Check, the Union will be required to make a simple majority (50% plus one) showing of interest for membership of the employees in the unit for recognition. The agreement will enhance Cingular's desire to achieve operational consistency in areas like Call Centers and further broadens the reach of the CWA, which already has agreements with Cingular in every region.

By signing the agreement Cingular makes available an orderly organizing campaign that will minimize disruption to the business for approximately 10,000 employees.

"The CWA is an important strategic partner for Cingular," said Lew Walker, vice president of human resources operations and labor relations for Cingular. "The agreement strengthens our current partnership-based relationship with CWA. We share mutual goals and values which will better enable us to continue to operate successfully in a very competitive environment."

"The agreement speaks volumes about Cingular's commitment to its employees and the value they place on their relationship with the CWA," said Jimmy Smith, vice president District 3 for CWA. He continues, "It satisfies our goal to represent Cingular on a national basis. We look forward to leveraging each others' strengths and working towards a mutually beneficial experience to make Cingular the premier wireless company."
