Communications Workers Back Cingular Bid for AT&T Wireless

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Communications Workers of America today backed Cingular's bid to buy AT&T Wireless, calling the pairing "an excellent match that will benefit shareholders of both companies."

With the possibility of rival bids for AT&T Wireless, "CWA will urge the half-million CWA members and retirees who hold AT&T Wireless stock, as well as major pension funds and investment groups, to support a deal with Cingular," said CWA President Morton Bahr.

"This is the only potential merger that creates the necessary scale to compete in the U.S. wireless marketplace," he stated. "Cingular's bid promises a clean, one-step transaction that will receive speedy regulatory approval."

"We have tremendous confidence in the leadership at SBC, BellSouth and Cingular Wireless, and we believe this is the best team to bring together a successful merger and enhance long-term value for shareholders," Bahr said.

CWA, representing 700,000 members, is the major union in the telecommunications industry. Most CWA members and retirees in the industry own AT&T Wireless stock.
