Communications Workers President Morton Bahr: 'Qwest Is in Good Hands With New Top Leadership'

Washington, D.C. – The head of the union representing 30,000 employees at Qwest Communications hailed the company's new CEO as "one of the best in the business" and called on the investment community to "give this leadership team a chance to turn the company around."

Communications Workers of America President Morton Bahr pointed out that business practices now under investigation at Qwest all took place under the leadership of former CEO Joseph Nacchio.

New CEO Richard Notebaert, who took the helm last month, "is a man of complete integrity who knows this business and enjoys the support and confidence of his workforce and our union," Bahr said. He noted that CWA had worked with Notebaert for many years as the head of Ameritech, where he lead that company, now part of SBC, into the forefront of emerging information technologies and services.

"Wall Street, along with Qwest's customers and business partners, can have full confidence in Dick Notebaert's commitment to setting the highest ethical standards and in his experience and executive ability," Bahr said. "This is a company that has a strong customer base, a highly skilled and dedicated workforce, and it now has the leadership team it needs to restore Qwest's reputation and business success."

CWA represents 700,000 workers in telecommunications, media, publishing, electronics manufacturing and other fields.
