County Officials Sign on to Fairness Campaign for Comcast Workers

Rockville, Md. -- Workers at Comcast Cable in Montgomery County, Md., are meeting with county elected officials and community leaders to spotlight the actions the cable company has taken to deny workers their right to fairly choose union representation.

At a forum at the Montgomery County Council Building today, elected officials and others are calling on Comcast to stop its intimidation and harassment of workers who are trying to form a union. This "appeal for fairness" calls on Comcast to stop its anti-worker campaign and allow employees to participate in a free and fair election.

The group is meeting at 1 p.m. at the Montgomery County Council Building, 100 Maryland Avenue, in Rockville.

A majority of the 320 workers at Comcast decided to form a union, working with the Communications Workers of America, over concerns about job safety, healthcare, wages and understaffing.

Comcast's response has been to block workers' right to a fair choice, through a campaign of intimidation and harassment.

CWA Vice President Pete Catucci, District 2, commended the cable workers for standing up for their right to a voice on the job, especially in light of the campaign Comcast has been waging. "I thank our elected officials and community leaders who want to spotlight these anti-worker tactics by calling on Comcast to act fairly," he said.

The workers have gained the support of U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan, among other leaders.

Montgomery County Council members Tom Perez, Phil Andrews and George Leventhal will sign the appeal today, along with President Henry Hailstock, local NAACP; President Jocelyn Williams, Washington metropolitan AFL-CIO, and President Gustavo Torres, CASA De Maryland.
