CWA, AFL-CIO Focus on Young Workers

CWA's Next Generation Committee is brainstorming new ways to build participation of young workers and leaders.

CWA’s Next Generation Committee, with members representing each district and sector, met for two days last week on efforts to expand involvement of young workers and young leaders within CWA.

The committee discussed leadership development, ways to encourage young workers to join the union, how to organize today’s young, independent mobile workers and how CWA can help them.

“CWA’s Next Generation committee is putting together an effective program that will reach out to young workers and make sure they can be involved in our union in meaningful ways,” said CWA Executive Vice President Annie Hill.

The AFL-CIO has released an updated survey of young workers that indicates they are growing more worried about the economy and that’s affecting how they plan for the future.

“Young workers are delaying milestones that other generations took for granted --buying house, getting married, having kids,” because of fears about finding and keeping living-wage jobs, AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler said.
