CWA Looks to Historic Affiliation of United American Nurses with AFL-CIO

CWA President Morton Bahr issued the following statement on the affiliation of the United American Nurses with the AFL-CIO. The AFL-CIO Executive Council has authorized the issuance of a charter to UAN; delegates to the UAN National Labor Assembly will vote on the charter next month.

The Communications Workers of America looks forward to welcoming the United American Nurses, the nationwide union arm of the American Nurses Association, as a full partner and member of the AFL-CIO.

This affiliation will unite the more than 100,000 registered staff nurses of UAN with the 13 million working men and women of the AFL-CIO, to provide a strong, effective voice on the critical issues facing nurse professionals: maintaining high standards of nursing practice, assuring quality patient care and addressing major concerns about staffing and working conditions.

CWA represents more than 100,000 health care and public workers, including registered and licensed nurses and other health care professionals. Our union has been working hard to focus national attention on these issues and on the need to improve recognition – including better compensation and benefits – for nursing and other health care professionals who are on the front lines in the fight for better health care for all.

We look forward to working with UAN, its members and officers, at every level, as all of us in the labor movement work to address the serious problems facing our nation's health care system.
