CWA Members Across Verizon Territory to Hold Mass Rallies for Fair Contract: Solidarity Events Begin

CWA members, on strike at Verizon Communications since August 6, will hold solidarity rallies throughout Verizon territory beginning Thursday, August 10, showing their determination to win a fair contract.

CWA is fighting for real job security protections, including limitations on the movement of work as Bell Atlantic consolidates its merger with GTE; enforceable limits on subcontracting; and access and opportunity for union members to the growth areas of the company. Other major issues include the elimination of such workplace problems as the excessive amounts of forced overtime workers are required to work and face because Verizon hasn't trained enough employees to meet the growing volume of work.

In New York on Thursday, August 10, CWA members will rally outside Verizon headquarters, 1095 6th Ave., beginning at 11 a.m. They will be joined by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), state and local elected officials, CWA's executive vice president Larry Cohen, AFL-CIO President John Sweeney and other supporters.

Also on Thursday, Ralph Nader will join members of CWA Local 2222 on the picket line at Fairview Park in Falls Church, Va., beginning 11:30 a.m. Other big rallies on Thursday include Albany, at Capitol Plaza, at noon.

On Friday, CWA President Morton Bahr, Executive Vice President Larry Cohen and District 2 Vice President Pete Catucci will join more than 500 members of CWA Local 2108 and union and community supporters at a mass rally outside a service facility in Beltsville, Md., located at 3901 Calverton Blvd., at 8 a.m.

Friday rallies also are scheduled for Boston, noon, at Post Office Square, 185 Franklin; Baltimore, 10 a.m. at 1 E. Pratt Street, and Pittsburgh, 9:30 a.m., plaza in front of the Steelworkers Building, Blvd. of the Allies.
