CWA Members Earn Degrees from Pace University On-Line Program

This year's graduating class at Pace University in New York includes 21 members of the Communications Workers of America, who earned their associate degrees in telecommunications and emerging technologies through a distance learning program developed through a partnership of CWA, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and several major telecom employers known as the National Coalition for Telecommunications Education and Learning – NACTEL.

Since 1998, the NACTEL program has enabled workers to expand their knowledge and skills, earning a degree that opens the door to a better job. The structured, on-line learning program allows workers to balance their family and job responsibilities, while mastering the changing technology of the telecom industry.

Among the CWA graduates who are receiving their diplomas today:

· Shannon Ray Peterson, a member of CWA Local 2109 in West Virginia, who balanced parenting his 11-year old, working as a Verizon Communications systems technician and a long commute to work to earn his degree.

· Mary Angela Kane, CWA Local 13000 in Pennsylvania, found that on-line learning allowed her the flexibility she needed as a single parent to care for two teenagers yet pursue her degree. Kane is now considering further studies for her bachelor's degree.

· Janette Miller, a member of CWA Local 1298 in Connecticut, was looking to move into a technical position and found that the NACTEL program, which covers the basics in telephony, voice and data transmission systems, broadband, wireless and other technology, helped her make the move. Apprehensive because she had little experience with computers, Miller found that she did better than she ever expected, thanks to the support of teachers and classmates at Pace.

CWA has been a pioneer in providing degree programs and lifelong learning opportunities to workers, and has negotiated with major employers like Verizon, SBC Communications, AT&T and others to provide workers with an educational structure that fits their work and family lives.

CWA's educational programs include a unique partnership with Cisco Systems, offering workers the opportunity to gain Cisco certifications online, for A+, Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) and other Cisco credentials. For more information, go to www.cwanett.org and www.nactel.org/cwa.
