CWA Releases TV Ad on Verizon-Big Cable Deal In D.C., PA and VA

Monopolistic Agreement Would Kill Jobs, Raise Prices And Worsen Digital Divide

Washington, D.C. – The Communications Workers of America (CWA) is releasing a television ad explaining the pitfalls of the imminent deal between Verizon and the nation’s largest cable companies, and urging consumers to call the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to register their opposition to it.

The ad– which explains how the deal would raise prices on consumers, kill jobs and eliminate competition– will begin running today. CWA has placed a significant news-oriented cable and broadcast buy in Washington D.C., along with cable buys in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Richmond, Virginia. The ad will also run during CBS’ "Face the Nation" on Sunday, August 12.

The ad states: “Behind closed doors, Verizon and the big cable companies have cooked up a monopoly deal that would raise prices and kill jobs…The Federal Communications Commission should act in the public interest, not corporate special interests. Call the FCC today.”

The release of the new ad follows the run of a similar ad in upstate media markets beginning last week (http://youtu.be/ZZ3JXOxw-qY). That ad ran in markets including Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, Utica and Watertown and on cable in New York City.

The FCC and Department of Justice (DOJ) are currently reviewing the agreement, and are expected to issue a decision on it in the coming weeks.
