Delegation to Raise Worker Rights in Education Tour to Taiwan

Washington, D.C. - A delegation of trade unionists from the United States will leave for Taiwan on Saturday, July 20, as part of an educational tour designed to promote discussion of the state of workers' rights in the United States with educators, community leaders, student groups and others.

The delegation also hopes to build new relationships between workers and unions in the United States and Taiwan and will work to promote respect for workers' rights by both Taiwanese employers in the United States and U.S. companies that have set up operations in Taiwan.

The delegation includes Lynne Wang, a reporter for the Chinese Daily News/World Journal in Monterey Park, Calif.; Kent Wong, director of the Center for Labor Research and Education at the University of California at Los Angeles and the founding president of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO; and Ben Hensler, AFL-CIO International Campaign Coordinator.

Wang has been an active part of the effort by the 150 workers at the Chinese Daily News to win union representation by The Newspaper Guild - Communications Workers of America. The newspaper workers voted for union representation in March 2001, despite a fierce anti-union campaign, but their employer continues to fight to block the workers' rights to representation. The Chinese Daily News workers have won the support of their community and elected officials who are helping them in the fight for justice.

More information on issues being raised by the tour is available in Mandarin Chinese and English at ga.cwa-union.org.
