GE National Bargaining Opens May 19 in New York; IUE-CWA Seeks Security in Pensions, Jobs, Health Ca

IUE-CWA, an affiliate of the Communications Workers of America, will begin national negotiations with General Electric Co. on Monday, May 19 in New York, for a new contract to replace the agreement that expires June 15. IUE-CWA represents 14,000 workers at GE.

IUE-CWA members are seeking a fair contract at GE, one that reflects the company's continuing financial achievements and the contributions workers have made to GE's success. For 2002, GE posted net profits of $15.1 billion.

Among workers' bargaining goals: the retention of quality manufacturing jobs in the United States, affordable, quality health care, and improvement in pensions for current and future retirees. IUE-CWA also will press for organizing rights to offset the hostile and anti-union tactics management has been following at GE facilities. IUE-CWA wants management neutrality in organizing campaigns so workers can make an informed choice about union representation without fear of management coercion and intimidation.

IUE-CWA represents workers at 48 locations in 23 states, working in GE's appliance, lighting, power systems, aircraft engine, industrial systems, silicone and transportation businesses.

Key IUE-CWA locations include aircraft engines in Lynn, Mass.; Appliance Park in Louisville, Ky.; power systems in Schenectady, N.Y.; industrial systems in Fort Wayne, Ind.; and lighting in the Cleveland area, among other locations.
