Global Unions Take on Fight for Fairness at Chinese Daily News

As part of an international mobilization campaign for respect for workers around the globe, the unions of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions are taking on the cause of workers at the Chinese Daily News.

The newspaper, owned by the United Daily News Group of Taiwan, publishes daily in Chinese in Monterey Park, Calif. Some 150 writers, editors, photographers, commercial sales and printing employees have been fighting for union representation and a fair contract for more than two years.

The ICFTU campaign begins today, May 1. Under the banner and call for "respect," a group of 12 global union federations representing more than 158 million workers will be demanding respect for all working people. The campaign will support the workers at the Chinese Daily News in their fight for workplace justice.

Throughout Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia, unionists will be marching, mobilizing and taking other actions to support workers' rights.

To help the Chinese Daily News workers, supporters are being asked to send a message to the newspaper's president Min Shen Su, protesting the company's violations of workers' rights and urging it to respect the democratic will of employees. To send a message to the company, go to www.unionvoice.org/campaign/cdn_respect.

The Chinese Daily News workers have filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board over management's violation of employees' right to representation and its harassment, intimidation and retaliation against union supporters at the company.

An NLRB administrative law judge has upheld the March 2001 election in which workers voted for representation by The Newspaper Guild-Communications Workers of America. But management continues to stall the bargaining process and has appealed that decision to the full NLRB in Washington, D.C.

Employees have met with NLRB regional staff to press their campaign and have won the support of members of the United States Congress, who have urged management to end its union-busting tactics and honor workers' rights to representation.
