Gore's Agenda is the Right One for Working Families, CWA Says

In his recent remarks to the Minnesota Community Technical College, Vice President Gore again demonstrated why his policies and programs are the right choice to move our nation forward into the Information Age, said Morton Bahr, president of the Communications Workers of America.

Gore focused on the need to make education and learning more available to workers and their families, especially if working people are to obtain the skills they need for the jobs of the future. In a fast-moving, fast-changing economy, Gore said, getting the right skills is essential. "Learning must last a lifetime," he said.

Gore also showed why thousands of working families support his candidacy, with its emphasis on opportunity, achievement and making the decisions that will benefit both current and future generations of Americans, Bahr said. The 630,000-member union has endorsed Gore's bid to become President of the United States in 2000.

Gore made the case that our nation must move forward, keep prosperity going "not only for us but for our children and grandchildren and use it to make sure no one is left behind."

He also outlined a program of targeted tax cuts in areas that will help working families- especially in the areas of education and health care- and called for initiatives to move businesses and workers into the 21st century. These include expanded tax cuts for research and development to boost small and start-up businesses and enable private sector companies to invest in the jobs and discoveries of the future; a new savings plan that will allow employers and employees to contribute to the education funds they will need, much like today's 401 (k) retirement plans; and additional tax savings and benefits for lower income families.

But Gore also focused on the need for employers to continue their commitment to quality training and education. "When employers offer tuition assistance to workers and their families, it creates a whole new generation of highly-educated, highly trained Americans. That's why we need permanent tax cuts for tuition assistance," he said.

"America can have tax cuts that reflect our values and strengthen hard-working families. Those are the kinds of tax cuts I will fight for," the vice president pledged.
