Members Okay New Telecom Contracts
CWA members at three telecommunications companies have ratified new agreements, winning a key CWA goal of cardcheck recognition along with wage, pension and benefit improvements in each settlement.
CWA members at Lucent Technologies ratified a new five-year agreement, with more than 71 percent of voting members approving the pact. The seven local agreements also were ratified. CWA represents some 26,000 workers at Lucent.
At AT&T, CWA members approved a new four-year contract — covering some 48,500 members — by a 55.7 percent vote. The local operations agreement also was ratified.
Members of CWA at Ameritech Corp., where CWA represents about 30,000 employees, ratified a new 32-month agreement with an 80 percent favorable vote.
CWA is bargaining this year on behalf of nearly 400,000 telecommunications workers. Negotiations are continuing for contracts covering workers at GTE, Bell Atlantic, BellSouth and U S West.
