Newspaper Guild Locals to Meet with Management on Growing Security, Health Threats
The Newspaper Guild-CWA is alerting local unions and activists to immediately seek to meet with newspaper and other media management to implement procedures that guarantee safe handling of materials being sent to newsrooms and other media operations.
The alert was issued following reports that a worker at NBC in New York had tested positive for cutaneous anthrax after opening some suspicious mail. This incident comes on the heels of the discovery that at least three workers at a Florida publisher have come in contact with a deadly strain of anthrax.
TNG-CWA President Linda Foley pointed out that under federal labor law, management is required to meet with the union about any health or safety issue. "Our locals must address what now appears to be a growing threat to workers' health and safety and security," she said.
