Newspaper Guild Website Tracks Role of Media in War on Terrorism

Terrorism

Newsrooms and journalists – in the United States and abroad – have been facing increased scrutiny in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks and the U.S. government's action to put an end to such terrorism.

The Newspaper Guild-CWA, which represents newspaper industry workers throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, has developed an electronic clearinghouse to track how news operations are treating journalists who express unconventional viewpoints in the aftermath of the attacks, and to provide an overview of the shifting criticism of media and censorship – in this country and others – during this critical time.

Articles, news accounts and commentary about the flow of information and the role of journalists during this period are being assembled at a new web page. To view, go to TNG-CWA's site, www.newsguild.org, and click on "Patriotism's 2-Edged Sword," or go directly to www.newsguild.org/2edged.php. TNG-CWA is encouraging readers to submit opinions and anecdotes about media criticism as well as additional examples of how journalists have been disciplined for expressing a dissenting point of view.

"In times like these, it is especially important to monitor threats to free speech, and this website will help promote a broad discussion of censorship issues and media criticism," said CWA President Morton Bahr.

TNG-CWA President Linda Foley said "this site is a very important resource for all of us who believe a free press and freedom of speech are among the rights that make us a great nation. Our democracy has long withstood dissent and differing opinion – in fact, it's our respect for a diversity of views that has made the United States a model of tolerance and respect."

The site reflects all points of view, from reports of a Texas columnist fired for criticism of government action, to an essay exploring the difference between expressing dissent and romanticizing it, to a global watch on the experiences of journalists worldwide.

To submit additional information to the site, email to guild@cwa-union.org.
