OSHA Takes Action Against Disciplining Workers Who Report Injuries

After nearly 2 1/2 years of CWA's efforts to have AT&T get rid of their behavior-based, safety discipline policies—during which time many locals have filed complaints with state and federal OSHAs (as well as contractual grievances)—the DOL filed suit against the company re. 13 Ohio cases. These are the best of the 34 total cases in Ohio. In addition to five Michigan administrative law judges' decisions against the company, this is a huge partial victory. We will be working to have DOL move on other federal OSHA cases with the idea of achieving a national settlement agreement with DOL and AT&T.

A primary issue will be eliminating discriminatory and illegal company policies that drive their performance and productivity programs, which, in turn, lead to increased member/worker occupational injuries, illnesses, and other health problems.

If you know of cases in which members have been disciplined/discriminated against for reporting an injury/illness and seeking medical attention for such injury/illness, please contact the Union's Occupational Safety and Health Department at legrande@cwa-union.org.
