Picketing by CWA Strikers will be Intensified Tomorrow Throughout New York State; Bahr Instructs All

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The president of the Communications Workers of America has alerted CWA locals in New York state that picketing by Verizon strikers from the mid-Atlantic states will be extended throughout New York tomorrow, and he stressed that all members are to be instructed to honor those picket lines.

"CWA members are always ready to help their union brothers and sisters in a struggle, and our members in New York will refuse to work -- from Buffalo and Upstate down to the boroughs of New York City - anywhere they encounter a CWA picketer," said CWA President Morton Bahr.

"The concept that an injury to one is an injury to all has been central to the principles of trade unionism since the days of the Knights of Labor, and it's just as true and basic to organized labor in the 21st Century," Bahr stated.

Picketing by members still on strike at Verizon so far has been confined chiefly to New York City. CWA Vice President Larry Mancino, who heads the union's District 1 headquartered in Manhattan, earlier had instructed locals in that area to honor the picket lines.

While a settlement was reached Sunday for CWA Verizon workers in the former Nynex region of New York and New England, some 37,000 CWA members remain on strike in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
