Settlement Gains Contraceptive Coverage for Dow Jones Workers

A settlement was reached with Dow Jones & Co., to provide contraceptive coverage in all medical plans for all its employees, plus retroactive reimbursement for contraceptive coverage bought by current and former employees back to Jan. 1, 2001.

Three members of the Independent Association of Publishers Employees, CWA Local 1096, supported by Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, had charged that Dow Jones’ policy of limiting contraceptive coverage and excluding it completely from one plan option discriminated against female employees.

The CWA local is an affiliate of The Newspaper Guild-CWA which has been working to resolve this issue since June 2001.

TNG-CWA President Linda Foley said the settlement was very positive for both Dow Jones employees and the company. “This is an issue of basic equity and fairness. Contraception is a health care concern for all workers and should be treated no differently than other necessary prescriptions.”
