Manchester Newspaper Guild
In the early 1940s, working journalists and ad reps at newspapers in Manchester had had enough.
Their weekly starting pay was in the teens, and after working at the company for years they were only pulling down weekly wages in the mid-20s. “We worked full-time for half-time salary,” recalled former reporter Paul Lacaillade. So when he got a call to attend a meeting one Sunday at the YMCA, he did -- and on Jan. 10, 1942, the Manchester Newspaper Guild was founded.
