The Newspaper Guild-CWA Applauds Senate Vote on Media Rules

Washington, D.C. -- Linda Foley, president of The Newspaper Guild-CWA, issued the following statement regarding today's vote by the U.S. Senate to rescind all the media consolidation rules issued by Federal Communication Commission on June 30.

"FCC Chairman Michael Powell chose to ignore the wishes of hundreds of thousands of citizens. The Senate today listened to those voices. The FCC's deregulation of media is bad for democracy. Today, democracy rose up to let the people be heard.

This bipartisan vote should send a clear signal to media conglomerates that the American public and their representatives in the Senate are not about to abandon democratic ideals and public discourse for corporate gains."
