Torchmark Ends Contract with Anti-Union MCI WorldCom

The Communications Workers of America today applauded the decision of Torchmark Corp. to terminate its telecommunications contract with anti-union MCI/WorldCom on April 1 and switch to AT&T. The new business for AT&T is estimated to be $6 million annually.

"When I brought to their attention that MCI/WorldCom was an anti-union company, Torchmark management responded immediately," said CWA President Morton Bahr. "Torchmark recognizes the value of the union label and the quality of union work."

Torchmark, based in McKinney, Tex., is a holding company for several insurance companies including American Income Life Insurance which a totally union organized company. Bahr also serves as chair of the AIL Labor Advisory Board, comprised of top officers of the AFL-CIO, international and national labor leaders and national political figures who voluntarily advise AIL on its products and services for union members and its contributions in support of labor-related causes.

"CWA is committed to supporting union employers and this action by Torchmark is another example of how labor and management can cooperate for the good of customers, shareholders and workers," said Bahr.
