Update on Verizon Bargaining, Aug. 13

Washington, D.C. -- Talks between CWA and Verizon recessed this afternoon and will resume Thursday, Aug. 14 at tables in Washington and New York.

Today, the AFL-CIO rolled out a support program, Fairness at Verizon, which will enlist potentially millions of union families in support of Verizon workers as they fight for a fair contract.

One element of this campaign, the carrier switch pledge program, calls on the labor movement and supporters in key Verizon East states to indicate their willingness to shift their local service to AT&T. Only if Verizon demonstrates its unwillingness to reach a fair agreement would the actual carrier switch be implemented.

The program was criticized by a company spokesman earlier today as "misguided" and harmful to union members' jobs. The real threat to workers' jobs is Verizon's demand to eliminate job security, and our members know that. Verizon wants to shift thousands of jobs away from our communities and to lay off workers at will.

The goal of the Fairness at Verizon campaign is to protect our members' jobs, which is good for both our communities and quality customer service.
