In states across the country, obstacles to voting have appeared, especially concerning voter ID requirements and early voting opportunities. Here's what you need to know to vote in Alaska in 2012:
ID REQUIREMENTS
Do I need to bring ID?
Yes, you will need to show proof of your identity at the polls. The following are acceptable forms of ID:
- Signed voter ID card;
- Driver's license;
- State ID card or military ID card;
- Passport, hunting or fishing license; and
- Other current or valid forms of photo identification.
You may also present one of the following forms of ID if it includes your name and current address:
- Current utility bill or paycheck;
- Government check or bank statement; or
- Other government-issued document.
EARLY AND ABSENTEE VOTING
How do I vote absentee early or absentee in-person?
Beginning 15 days prior to an election, and continuing through Election Day, voters may vote:
- Absentee early at a regional elections office in the jurisdiction where the voter is registered. Regional offices are located in Juneau, Anchorage, Wasilla, Fairbanks and Nome; or
- Absentee in-person at any regional elections office or absentee voting location.
How do I vote absentee by mail or absentee by fax?
Any qualified voter registered in the state of Alaska may apply for a ballot through the mail or fax. Voters may begin applying for a by-mail ballot beginning in January of each election year. Voters may begin applying for a by-fax ballot beginning 15 days before an election. To obtain an application, or to find out more about application completion deadlines, visit the State of Alaska Division of Elections at: www.elections.alaska.gov or call the Absentee and Petition Office at 907-375-6400 or toll-free at 877-375-6508 (within the United States).
What is a special advance ballot?
Voters who may be living, traveling or working outside the United States or in remote areas of Alaska may request the special advance ballot by selecting this option on the absentee ballot application.
The special advance ballot is sent to areas where mail service may be slow to allow additional time for voters to cast a ballot. This is a blank ballot with spaces for the voter to write in the names of candidates and/or issues. This ballot is mailed beginning 60 days through 28 days before Election Day.
In addition to the special advance ballot, voters are mailed the official ballot beginning approximately three weeks before Election Day. Voters are encouraged to vote and return both ballots. If both ballots are returned in time, only the official ballot will be counted.
