We're part of a growing army of thousands of CWA retirees who are working with our union to protect benefits and programs that are critical to our retirement – retiree health care, pensions, Social Security, Medicare and more.
As Council members, we may be retired but we remain active in the life of our union. Because of the steady erosion in the retirement security of most Americans, we believe it's essential that we actively participate in the struggle to protect our benefits.
Health care, pensions under attack
One after another, corporations are turning their backs on retirees. Many have dramatically increased retiree health care costs or eliminated coverage altogether. Most employers are failing to provide pensioners with cost of living raises. Others are not only terminating future pensions for active employees but also are leaving their retirees high and dry by forcing the government to take over pension plans they dumped during bankruptcy reorganizations.
We joined together in the Retired Members' Council for the same reasons that we organized with CWA where we worked. Many of the hard-fought benefits that we enjoy today – as both active and retired members – are never totally secure. By joining together, we have the collective strength we will need to address these challenges.
