Early Talks Open with Southwestern, PacTel; AT&T and Lucent Bargaining Set Next Month

CWA and SBC Corp. agreed to open early contract negotiations covering 43,000 members at Southwestern Bell and 35,000 at Pacific Telesis beginning on March 9 with an accelerated timetable for completion. The current agreements expire on August 8 and normally bargaining would have begun in June.

Vice Presidents Ben Turn of District 6, covering the Southwestern region, and Tony Bixler of District 9, California and Nevada, said the two districts will be closely coordinating their efforts as they bargain with the newly merged SBC companies.

Both officers said they saw an opportunity to build on the positive relationship that has been developed with SBC, where CWA achieved breakthrough card-check recognition agreements last year. Management has assured the union that it will not be demanding contract concessions, they reported.

Meanwhile, talks continue at Bell Atlantic on possible contract extensions at Bell Atlantic “North” (formerly NYNEX), where CWA represents 37,000 members, and Bell Atlantic “South” covering another 36,000. Negotiations, requested by the company, are centering on pension issues, reported Vice Presidents Larry Mancino of District 1, Vince Maisano of District 13, and Pete Catucci of District 2 at CWA News press time.

Bargaining will open with AT&T on April 6, and with Lucent Technologies April 20, announced Communications and Technologies Vice President Jim Irvine. CWA represents about 50,000 members at AT&T and 26,000 at Lucent.
